Ishe Samuels Smith Joins Xabi Alonso Chelsea Pre Season Group

Ishe Samuels-Smith will be part of Xabi Alonso’s first Chelsea summer group, but his opportunity will come with limits.

Football London reports that the 20-year-old defender will join Alonso’s group at Cobham as he recovers from quadriceps surgery. He will not take part in full training next week and will focus on gym work as he builds fitness.

Chelsea have confirmed that Alonso and the players not involved at the World Cup will report to Cobham on Thursday, 9 July. The club also confirmed that Alonso’s first game will come against Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia on Tuesday, 28 July.

Samuels-Smith, then, has a different kind of first impression to make. He cannot win the argument through full training yet, but Alonso can still judge his profile, attitude and place in the club’s plans.

Chelsea Need A Better Loan Route

Samuels-Smith joined Chelsea from Everton in July 2023. His official Chelsea profile lists him as a centre-back and left-back, while Transfermarkt also lists him as a left-sided defender under contract until 2031.

Last season did not give him the rhythm Chelsea would have wanted.

Football London reports that Samuels-Smith moved to Strasbourg, returned to Chelsea after just 33 days and then joined Swansea City on loan. He made only eight appearances in all competitions during his spell in south Wales.

For a young defender, that matters. A loan does not need to look perfect, but it has to give the player regular football, defensive pressure and a clear role.

ReadChelsea has already covered how Alonso’s first Cobham group gives fringe players and younger names a useful early window. Samuels-Smith will be in that environment, even if he cannot yet take part fully.

Chelsea now need the next move to carry more structure than the last one.

Alonso Can Still Learn Enough

A Championship loan looks the likeliest next step, with Football London reporting that several second-tier clubs hold interest.

Chelsea should be careful with the destination.

Samuels-Smith needs a manager who sees him as part of the team rather than squad cover. He also needs a role that suits his development, whether at left-back, left centre-back or as a defender asked to build from the back.

Alonso’s view can help shape that decision.

The new Chelsea head coach will want defenders who can step into possession, receive under pressure and cover space without losing defensive discipline. Samuels-Smith has the size and positional flexibility to interest him, but the injury changes the summer assessment.

The next few weeks will show more about process than performance.

Alonso can still watch how Samuels-Smith handles rehab, tactical meetings and individual work. Those details may influence whether Chelsea push for a strong Championship move or accept a more convenient offer.

Chelsea Cannot Let Another Loan Drift

Chelsea have invested heavily in young players and pathways across the BlueCo model. Samuels-Smith now gives the club a smaller but important test of that approach.

If Chelsea still see him as a serious project, his next loan needs purpose. Minutes alone will not be enough if they come in the wrong role or at a club without a clear plan for him.

ReadChelsea recently looked at Joseph Wheeler-Henry’s move to Brentford and what it said about academy players choosing a clearer route elsewhere. Samuels-Smith sits on the other side of that question because Chelsea have kept control of his pathway.

That control now brings responsibility.

A strong Championship loan could reset his momentum after a difficult year. A vague move would only repeat the problem.

Alonso does not need to make a final judgement in July. He does need enough information to help Chelsea choose the right next step.

For Samuels-Smith, the summer is not a normal first-team audition. It may still decide whether his Chelsea route becomes clearer or more complicated.
