Chelsea could allow Mamadou Sarr to leave on loan this summer, with a Premier League move currently viewed as the preferred option.
The 20-year-old has several potential destinations as the Blues consider the best route for his development under Xabi Alonso.
Sam Tabuteau reports that a temporary departure is the most likely outcome. However, Sarr could still remain with Chelsea’s first team if he impresses Alonso during their planned discussions.
Chelsea want the Senegal international to receive regular Premier League minutes should they approve another loan.
A Yahoo Sports report carrying Tabuteau’s exclusive states that Chelsea are prepared to let Sarr leave temporarily while Alonso finalises his squad for the new season.
Alonso must decide Sarr’s immediate role
Sarr joined Chelsea from Strasbourg in 2025 and signed a contract running until 2033.
He returned to the French club on loan before Chelsea recalled him in February. Sarr had made 18 appearances for Strasbourg across Ligue 1 and the Conference League before returning to Stamford Bridge.
The centre-back then gained first-team experience at Chelsea and represented Senegal during the World Cup.
As Read Chelsea recently examined, the tournament offered Alonso another opportunity to assess whether Sarr is ready for an immediate senior role.
Chelsea already have several centre-backs competing for minutes, while the club continue to explore further defensive additions.
A Premier League loan could give Sarr the regular football required without removing him from English football.
However, Alonso may decide the defender’s pace, physical profile and ability on the ball are valuable enough to retain.
The planned talks will determine whether Sarr competes for a Chelsea place or continues his development elsewhere next season.
