Paris Saint-Germain defender Illia Zabarnyi has been offered to Chelsea and Liverpool, although neither club has opened talks over a move. Xabi Alonso is assessing his centre-back options before the new season.
Alex Crook reports that intermediaries have alerted both clubs to Zabarnyi’s situation. No asking price has been mentioned, while PSG have not indicated that they are actively trying to sell him.
The 23-year-old joined PSG from Bournemouth last summer in a deal worth £54.5million. He signed a five-year contract after making 78 Premier League appearances for the south-coast club.
PSG describe Zabarnyi as a strong and composed defender who reads danger well. His experience in England would also reduce the usual adaptation period attached to an overseas signing.
Illia Zabarnyi offers Chelsea another defensive option
Zabarnyi is comfortable defending large spaces and has the pace to play in a high line. He is also strong in the air and capable of progressing possession from the back.
Those qualities could suit Alonso’s preferred style. Chelsea are expected to build patiently while asking their defenders to hold an aggressive position.
However, Zabarnyi is only one of several names under consideration. The Blues remain interested in Maxence Lacroix, who is believed to be their leading defensive target.
Chelsea have already accelerated talks with Crystal Palace over Lacroix. Palace want a package worth at least £60million, while the France international is keen on the move.
John Stones is another possible option following his departure from Manchester City. Chelsea must now decide whether to prioritise a free transfer, continue pursuing Lacroix or explore Zabarnyi’s availability.
Liverpool could also become serious competition. Zabarnyi previously worked under Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth, which may make Anfield an attractive destination.
For now, the Illia Zabarnyi Chelsea transfer remains at an early stage. Chelsea have been presented with the opportunity, but no formal approach has followed.
