Chelsea overturn six-point deduction after successful FA appeal

Chelsea have successfully overturned a six-point deduction after appealing against a punishment imposed over 74 historical rule breaches.

The Chelsea six-point deduction had been suspended until June 2027, but it has now been replaced by a suspended two-window transfer ban.

Mail Sport reports that an independent Regulatory Commission initially imposed the suspended points deduction and a £10million fine.

Chelsea challenged the sporting sanction before an independent Appeal Board. The appeal was successful, although the £10m financial penalty was not contested and must still be paid.

The replacement registration ban covers two complete and consecutive transfer windows. However, it remains suspended until 30 June 2027 and will not immediately prevent Chelsea from signing players.

Chelsea can therefore continue their current recruitment work, including the experienced additions discussed in ReadChelsea’s analysis of the club’s transfer strategy following the Jordan Henderson deal.

Why the Chelsea six-point deduction was overturned

The FA originally charged Chelsea with 74 breaches of regulations concerning agents, intermediaries and third-party investment.

The conduct under investigation ranged from 2009 to 2022, although the FA said most of the breaches related to the 2010/11 to 2015/16 seasons. They occurred during Roman Abramovich’s ownership of the club.

Chelsea’s current ownership discovered the potential irregularities during its due-diligence process before completing the 2022 takeover. BlueCo then voluntarily reported the information to the relevant football authorities and provided thousands of documents.

The club admitted all 74 breaches before the original hearing. Chelsea’s cooperation and decision to self-report formed an important part of the regulatory process.

Chelsea said the conclusion of the FA proceedings brings all regulatory action concerning the historical issues to an end. Separate settlements had already been reached with UEFA and the Premier League.

The FA will invest the £10m fine in grassroots football. Its investigation into potential misconduct by individuals connected to the case remains ongoing.

Chelsea have avoided an immediate points deduction and retain the ability to register first-team signings. However, another significant breach before 30 June 2027 could activate the suspended two-window ban.
