Chelsea make contact to sign £42m Serie A defender

Chelsea have contacted the representatives of Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini as they consider adding another centre-back to Xabi Alonso’s squad.

The Chelsea move for Giorgio Scalvini remains at an early stage, but the Blues are now one of three Premier League clubs monitoring the 22-year-old.

The Sun reports that Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have all approached Scalvini’s camp to discuss the conditions of a possible transfer. Atalanta are reportedly demanding around £42million and have no intention of accepting a significantly lower fee.

Chelsea move for Giorgio Scalvini could depend on defensive exits

Chelsea are yet to submit an official offer, while Newcastle are reportedly considering testing Atalanta with a £34m proposal.

Scalvini is understood to be open to moving to the Premier League, which could make personal terms relatively straightforward if Chelsea advance negotiations. The Italy international made 30 appearances across all competitions last season and has attracted interest because of his composure and physical profile.

However, another defensive arrival would require further movement in Alonso’s squad.

Chelsea have already strengthened at centre-back by signing Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. They also retain Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato, Tosin Adarabioyo, Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino among their defensive options.

Trevoh Chalobah could soon become one of the players to leave. Como are preparing an improved €30m offer plus bonuses, with ReadChelsea reporting that the defender has already agreed terms with the Serie A club.

Alonso has made clear that he does not want to carry an oversized group of centre-backs into the new season. That makes departures important before Chelsea commit another significant fee to the position.

Scalvini fits the younger profile Chelsea have targeted throughout the BlueCo era. At £42m, though, the Blues may first need to decide whether another central defender is a greater priority than strengthening elsewhere.
