Xabi Alonso has hinted that Chelsea are not finished in the transfer market after admitting the club can still take “a few more” steps this summer.
Chelsea transfers have already reshaped his squad, but the manager appears to believe further work is required before the window closes.
Alonso was asked about the backing he has received since taking charge at Stamford Bridge.
“We have taken a few steps but I feel that we can still take a few more,” he said.
The comment is significant because Chelsea have already been active throughout the summer. However, Alonso has repeatedly stressed that building the right squad is about balance rather than simply collecting talent.
ReadChelsea’s transfer hub has tracked the changes already made to Alonso’s squad, including major additions and several players who could still leave before the deadline.
Chelsea transfers could continue before window closes
Alonso’s latest comments suggest that process is still ongoing.
The Spaniard has already spoken about wanting the right mix of personalities and experience. Therefore, Chelsea’s remaining business may depend as much on squad balance as individual quality.
His influence also appears important. Alonso is Chelsea’s first manager, rather than head coach, under the current ownership structure and has been involved in discussions over the direction of the squad.
In a wider interview, Alonso explained that he raised concerns about Chelsea before accepting the job. However, he was encouraged because the club’s hierarchy reached the same conclusions about what needed to improve.
Chelsea still have almost a month to shape the squad.
Further departures remain possible, while Alonso’s “few more” comment leaves the door open for additional arrivals.
For now, Chelsea’s summer rebuild looks far from complete.
