Chelsea make huge Joao Pedro call despite having six years left on deal

Chelsea have underlined Joao Pedro’s status as one of Xabi Alonso’s key players after the Brazilian signed improved terms at Stamford Bridge.

Fabrizio Romano reports Pedro has put pen to paper on a new deal running until June 2032, with an option allowing Chelsea to extend his stay beyond that point.

The 24-year-old has also received a salary increase.

That detail is particularly significant because Chelsea were already in an extremely strong contractual position with their first-choice striker.

Joao Pedro Chelsea contract sends clear message

Pedro originally joined Chelsea from Brighton on a long-term deal in 2025 and quickly became one of the club’s most important attacking players.

ReadChelsea reported earlier this month that Chelsea were preparing to reward Pedro after his outstanding first season, despite already having years remaining on his existing agreement.

The contract upgrade has now been completed.

Rather than waiting until Pedro entered the final years of his deal, Chelsea have acted early to increase his salary and strengthen their control over his future.

Romano describes the Brazilian as a key part of the Chelsea project.

His performances explain why.

Pedro scored 20 times last season before adding seven more goals during pre-season, including a brace in Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad.

His position has become even more important while Alonso reshapes the rest of his striker department.

ReadChelsea reported on Wednesday that Emmanuel Emegha will remain in the first-team squad as £100m worth of decisions loom over Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap.

Pedro is facing no such uncertainty.

Jackson continues to attract interest, Delap could leave for the right price and Emegha is being retained as another option.

Chelsea have instead handed Pedro better terms when there was no immediate contractual need to do so.

That may be the clearest indication yet of who Alonso’s attack is being built around.
