Xabi Alonso explains Enzo Fernandez Chelsea omission amid Man City interest

Xabi Alonso has explained why Enzo Fernandez was left out of Chelsea’s squad against Luton Town, denying reports that the midfielder asked not to play.

Fernandez was surprisingly absent from both the starting XI and substitutes as Chelsea secured a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.

An earlier report from Argentine journalist César Luis Merlo claimed Fernandez had personally asked Alonso not to feature. Alonso has now directly contradicted that account.

The Chelsea head coach said the decision was made by himself and the club, with other players needing minutes against Luton.

Xabi Alonso denies Enzo Fernandez request claim

Fernandez’s absence immediately attracted attention because Alonso had said only a day earlier that the Argentina international was expected to feature.

When asked after the match about reports that Fernandez himself had requested to sit out the fixture, Alonso responded:

“No, it was a decision from myself and from the club.”

Alonso also denied that the omission was caused by transfer negotiations with Manchester City.

He explained that Chelsea had assessed what was best for the team and wanted to give minutes to other members of the squad.

That clarification is significant after Fernandez’s absence had become one of the main talking points surrounding Chelsea’s confirmed XI against Luton.

Fernandez was initially expected to play some part before Alonso changed his plans following Wednesday’s press conference.

The midfielder ultimately watched on as Chelsea beat Luton 2-0 to reach the Carabao Cup third round.

Enzo Fernandez future still uncertain

Alonso’s explanation separates Fernandez’s Luton absence from the Manchester City transfer situation, but uncertainty surrounding the player’s future remains.

Chelsea are prepared to consider selling Fernandez if their valuation is met and they can sufficiently strengthen Alonso’s squad before the transfer window closes.

Manchester City are expected to make a late attempt to sign the midfielder, although Sky Sports reported on Friday morning that there have not yet been club-to-club talks between the two sides.

ReadChelsea has already covered Manchester City’s interest in a late move for Fernandez.

Alonso also stopped short of guaranteeing Fernandez would remain at Stamford Bridge when discussing his future before the Luton tie.

After Thursday’s game, however, the Chelsea head coach was complimentary about the midfielder’s conduct.

He described Fernandez as a good professional who has continued to train well, before indicating that his availability for Sunday’s Premier League game against Brighton will be assessed.

For now, the important correction is clear.

Alonso says Fernandez did not ask to be left out against Luton. The decision was made by Chelsea and their head coach.
