Brighton responded through Malick Yalcouyé before half-time and reduced the deficit again when a Pascal Groß delivery deflected into the Chelsea net off Joao Pedro.
Cole Palmer eventually restored Chelsea’s two-goal cushion with an excellent finish from outside the penalty area in the 74th minute.
Groß headed in with virtually the final action of the match to make it 4-3, but Chelsea held on for a second consecutive league victory. Chelsea’s official match report confirms Palmer’s strike ultimately proved decisive.
