Chelsea hand Tottenham £75m decision in stunning Mudryk deal

Chelsea have agreed to send Mykhailo Mudryk to Tottenham on loan, with Spurs holding a reported £75million option to make the transfer permanent.

The two London clubs have reached an agreement for Mudryk to spend the season with Tottenham after talks accelerated during the closing stages of the transfer window.

The Press Association reports that the deal includes a £75m purchase option, although Tottenham are not obliged to activate it.

It represents major progression after ReadChelsea reported that Tottenham had opened talks over a shock move for Mudryk.

Chelsea agree Mykhailo Mudryk loan to Tottenham

Chelsea have now sanctioned the temporary departure of a player they originally signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023.

PA reports that Tottenham have agreed a season-long loan for Mudryk, with the deal expected to contain an option allowing Spurs to buy him for £75m.

That clause is understood to be optional rather than an obligation.

It gives Chelsea the possibility of securing a substantial future fee if Mudryk impresses in north London, while Tottenham can assess the winger over a full season before deciding whether to commit permanently.

Mudryk’s move will also reunite him with Roberto De Zerbi.

The Tottenham boss previously coached the Ukrainian at Shakhtar and played an important role during the period in which Mudryk emerged as one of Europe’s most highly rated young attackers.

The winger subsequently joined Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £62m, with potential add-ons taking the package considerably higher.

Tottenham offered £75m Mudryk decision

The size of Tottenham’s purchase option is particularly notable.

Chelsea are not giving Spurs a straightforward cut-price route to a permanent transfer despite allowing Mudryk to move to a Premier League rival.

Instead, Tottenham will have to make a significant financial commitment next summer if they want to retain him.

The loan meanwhile gives Mudryk an opportunity to rebuild momentum and secure regular football.

Chelsea have considerable attacking depth available to Xabi Alonso, reducing the need to keep the 25-year-old at Stamford Bridge if regular minutes cannot be guaranteed.

Tottenham have now moved decisively after initially exploring a deal, and the transfer is heading towards completion before Tuesday night’s deadline.

Chelsea therefore retain control over Mudryk’s longer-term future while giving one of their most expensive signings the chance to restart his career under a manager who knows him well.
