Chelsea fans are used to seeing the club create a plethora of leading headlines in the news and dominating airwaves during transfer windows since our new ownership took charge, and credit where it is due, we have signed some fascinating players for some incredible fees.
Defying The Odds
We have also defied the Premier League betting options and any other odds you want to throw at Stamford Bridge, and constantly silenced our new financial doubters by being very creative in the transfer market and with contracts as we went. Not least we have been incredibly savvy with our transfer departures – eeking out every available last penny – to ensure that we have safely skirted the requirements of the Profit and Sustainability Rules, and latterly, the new fangled Squad Cost Ratio replacement.
Yes, we came a mild cropper to UEFA’s far tighter SCR requirements, but with a simple agreement made (much like other sides including Aston Villa), a fine was paid and promises made and we were fine and dandy. This summer we have been back in the news as the media have focused on our trading arrangements with the aforementioned Villa, as the deal for goalkeeper Emi Martinez took us to eight permanent and loan deals between both sides since the summer of 2022.
Media Incensed
Eight is a number we also share with Brighton and Hove Albion but for some reason, the press do not seem interested in that because we were buying in those cases. Only sales imply something dodgy can be going on – whilst they go to pains to say nothing has taken place outside of the rules or has been untoward. The media became even more incensed when on deadline day we announced the future signing of 18 year old Italian international Honest Ahanor from Serie A side Atalanta.
Now, despite having him pose with the shirt, we have not yet signed him, so we have not loaned him to Crystal Palace – Atalanta have done that. Our earlier dealing’s with the Selhurst Park outfit when we signed Maxence Lacroix whilst loaning them Axel Disasi, are completely unrelated. We may have been uber clever, but we have not broken any rules again that are not there for any side to utilise in this way should they wish, and we certainly have not done Palace any great favours in the process.
Conspiracy Theories?
It seems that this conspiracy stuff is easy is it not? It seems far more legal, and within the spirit of things, to just own a vast network of other teams from the United States down to Australia, and have loads of commercial deals with yourself, but woe betide anyone who operates within the actual rules themselves and does not need lengthy legal shenanigans to explain their actions.
Given it has now been confirmed that Manchester City have paid the fee for Enzo Fernandez – a whopping £125 million to become the joint British transfer fee just like we said it would be – I cannot wait for Wednesday’s meltdown.
Which scally shouted 115 charges? It’s all Chelsea, baby!
