Xabi Alonso makes huge Moises Caicedo claim before Brentford

Xabi Alonso has described Moises Caicedo as one of the world’s best midfielders as Chelsea wait to discover whether he can return against Brentford.

The Ecuador international has endured a frustrating start to the season after a calf problem restricted him to just 14 Premier League minutes.

Caicedo is now getting closer to another comeback, with Alonso confirming that a final decision over his involvement at the Gtech Community Stadium will be made after Chelsea’s last training session.

But the Chelsea head coach left little doubt over how highly he rates the 24-year-old.

Xabi Alonso makes Moises Caicedo admission

Speaking during his pre-Brentford press conference, Alonso was asked how much Caicedo’s return could improve the balance of his team.

“Moises is one of the top midfielders in the world,” Alonso said.

He added that Chelsea are a better team when the Ecuador international is available and highlighted the balance, presence and influence he provides in midfield.

That is particularly significant given Chelsea’s difficulties controlling games during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Alonso admitted in the same press conference that his side need to find a better balance between defence and attack after conceding too frequently.

Caicedo could become central to solving that problem.

Chelsea have badly missed Caicedo

Caicedo missed Chelsea’s opening two Premier League fixtures before returning from the bench against Brighton.

That comeback lasted just 14 minutes after he aggravated the calf problem which had already delayed the start of his campaign.

Alonso subsequently admitted he may have brought the midfielder back too quickly and has taken a far more cautious approach to his recovery since.

Chelsea’s recent training update showed Caicedo remained one of the major fitness concerns before Brentford, although Alonso has now confirmed he is getting closer.

Romeo Lavia and Reece James have carried much of the responsibility in central midfield during his absence.

Chelsea have remained dangerous going forward but have struggled for the defensive stability Alonso wants from his side.

Caicedo could return against Brentford

Asked directly about Caicedo’s progress, Alonso confirmed the midfielder is nearing a return but refused to guarantee his place in Friday’s squad.

Chelsea will make their final decision following the last training session.

That cautious approach is understandable after Caicedo’s previous comeback ended almost immediately.

Alonso nevertheless made clear that he is eager to have the midfielder available again.

Chelsea travel to Brentford looking to respond after dropping points against Arsenal and Hull City in their previous two Premier League matches.

The Blues’ latest Brentford preview outlines the challenge awaiting Alonso’s side, with midfield control likely to be particularly important against a team dangerous in transition.

Whether Caicedo is ready to return remains uncertain.

What is far clearer is how important Alonso believes he will be once Chelsea can finally call upon him consistently.
