Honest Ahanor has been backed to suit Xabi Alonso’s football by Genoa sporting director Diego Lopez, who believes his Crystal Palace spell can prepare him for Chelsea.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Standard Sport, Lopez highlighted the defender’s confidence defending away from his own goal and his ability to move possession through opposition lines.
“He has the capacity to bring the ball and to find passes between the lines,” Lopez said.
The assessment offers Chelsea supporters a clearer picture of the player secured in a deal worth £40m.
Why Crystal Palace matters for Honest Ahanor
ReadChelsea previously covered Ahanor’s agreement to join Chelsea in 2027.
The 18-year-old is spending this season on loan at Palace from Atalanta before his permanent move takes effect.
Lopez sees similarities between the approaches of Palace manager Pierre Sage and Alonso. He believes the Premier League spell can help Ahanor adjust to English football before arriving at Stamford Bridge.
For Chelsea, the tactical appeal is clear. A defender who can handle space behind him and progress the ball would offer useful qualities in an ambitious defensive system.
Chelsea’s problems controlling transitions against Brentford showed how demanding those responsibilities can be.
Palace gives Ahanor the opportunity to develop against Premier League opposition before competing for a Chelsea place next summer.
