Romeo Lavia handed Belgium opening as De Bruyne and Tielemans bans force France rethink

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia could return to Belgium’s starting XI against France after suspensions ruled out Kevin De Bruyne and Youri Tielemans.

Belgian broadcaster Starsport reports that both midfielders will miss Monday’s meeting, leaving Mark van Bommel with two enforced changes at the Stade de France.

That creates an opening for Lavia, although the Chelsea midfielder’s selection remains unconfirmed.

Belgium must rebuild their midfield

Lavia already knows the challenge France pose. He started alongside Tielemans in Belgium’s midfield during their previous meeting on 28 September.

Chelsea’s official report highlighted his defensive contribution, including a goal-line clearance, before Michael Olise struck the winner after his withdrawal.

The subsequent discussion centred on Lavia’s fitness following that appearance. Belgium now face a different question: how to organise their midfield without two established starters.

Lavia offers an option at the base of that reshaped unit. However, replacing De Bruyne’s attacking contribution and Tielemans’ role alongside him will require more than a straightforward swap.

Van Bommel must decide both who starts and how the remaining midfielders share those responsibilities.

For Chelsea supporters following the club’s international commitments, Monday brings a meaningful selection test. The opportunity has widened for Lavia, but the team announcement will determine whether he takes it.
