As expected, Mourinho was faced with a barrage of question concerning Chelsea’s seemingly imminent Premier League Title, with the Special One simply stating the facts and remaining subdued:
‘We need two or three points to be champions. We need a victory, three points, if we can do at home that’s better. If we can do it on Sunday then even better, that’s what we have in our mind. We are calm.’
Indeed, Mourinho revealed he has no party planned for Sunday night, even if Chelsea secure all three points at home to Crystal Palace:
‘I think I go home. In this moment we have nothing prepared. Normally I will finish the game and go home.’
However as one might expect, Mourinho was not shy in highlighting Chelsea’s domination of the biggest prize in domestic football this season while also pointing to the Premier League’s unrivaled competitiveness:
‘We are top of the league since day one. It’s not a record but in modern day football it’s very difficult to do.There are countries where domination is common for years and years. I don’t think this country is a good example of that except in the last 20 or years ago when it was shared between a few clubs. When the season starts, if you want to be champion you also have the risk to finish fifth.’
When questioned why the blues have been so dominant this season, Mourinho insisted his nearest competitors should not be criticised and that Chelsea should be congratulated:
‘Only one team can win. Many people speak about failure but I don’t think we can speak about failure. All we can do is congratulate the winner and go again next season. This is a very competitive championship. It’s not over yet. Everybody for sure works hard to try to reach their objectives.’
Diego Costa’s fitness has been a feature of Chelsea’s press conferences for much of this season, and the Brazilian-born striker could potentially miss the rest of the season as a precautionary measure:
‘We don’t need to rush so we are giving him the maximum stability to be stronger; there’s a chance [he may not play again this season]. If we win on Sunday he won’t play against Liverpool. During the holiday period he can mix the holiday with work.’
Although Costa’s absence may be mitigated by the return of Loïc Rémy, which Mourinho was able to confirm.
