Galatasaray rekindle interest in Mikel

Galatasaray have renewed their interest in the Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, according to Turkish Football.

The Turkish giants have been linked with Mikel in the past as they are targeting a central midfielder in the January transfer window. The club are apparently searching for a replacement for Felipe Melo, who was sold to Inter Milan in the summer.

Mustafa Denizili’s side will apparently make an enquiry to Chelsea for Mikel and make an offer based upon Chelsea’s response.

Mikel has appeared over 225 times for the Blues since his controversial transfer from Lyn in 2006 and achieved cult status amongst the fans.

Yet, the 28-year-old has never truly cemented his place in the side under Jose Mourinho and has happily played a specialist and limited role for the Premier League champions, despite being one of the more senior and experienced players in the squad.

The Nigerian international could be tempted by the offer of regular first-team football without compromising his wages to play for the Turkish side, who currently have Wesley Sneijder, Lukas Podolski and Kevin Grosskreutz on their books.

It seems likely Chelsea will seek reinforcements in January to salvage their season, which could make Mikel expendable and with just nine appearances for Chelsea this season, he could seek one last starting opportunity in Europe.
