The father of Joaquin Sanchez has explained how his son missed out on a big-money move to Chelsea earlier in his career.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo, a €36 million deal had been agreed between both clubs during Jose Mourinho’s first spell in charge of the club.
Aurelio Sánchez explains that Mourinho was keen to bring the player to London, in what would have been a blockbuster deal for that price at the time.
The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League throughout his career but no deal ever took place.
It has been well documented that Chelsea were keen to sign him over the years, but Sanchez reveals just how close a deal was.
The signing for Chelsea was done, they were 36 million euros for the club plus another three for a friendly; and six per season for Joaquin, who would sign five years. I would take three million euros and Jorge Mendes three others for the operation.
Joaquin’s father goes on to reveal that the player opted against the move in order to stay in Spain.
He was in Madrid and I called him to take the first plane to Seville, which he had to sign. He could have made a fortune. But he never moved the money.
Now at the age of 37, Joaquin is back playing his football in Betis after spells with Valencia, Malaga and Fiorentina.
