Giroud provides update on Chelsea future

Olivier Giroud admits his Chelsea future could depend on whether or not the Blues end up receiving a transfer ban.

The west Londoners have been handed a two-window ban by FIFA, although that is pending an appeal next month.

Giroud’s future has been up in the air all season, with first-team action hard to come by and his 33rd birthday approaching later this year.

The striker became France’s third-highest scorer on Monday night, scoring in Les Bleus‘ 4-0 win over Iceland.

He admits he is still unsure if he will stay at Chelsea beyond the summer, claiming the transfer ban could play a pivotal role:

Of course there is a chance I could still be at Chelsea next season, yes, the door is not closed.

At the club we still need to wait to see regarding if we will have the opportunity to get some players [in the next transfer windows].

If not the club will be blocked and maybe then they will need me more and to offer me something. I am very happy there, but it all depends on a few things so we will see.

The French media have made too much of some comments from me trying to push me into a move to Lyon.

I am staying objective, and if I can stay at Chelsea I will be happy – but I need to play more.

Giroud could have a big role to play in the remainder of the season, as Chelsea look to clinch a top-four finish and also seal Europa League glory.

Gonzalo Higuain has struggled since joining on loan in January, meaning Giroud could get more chances to impress in the coming weeks.

Maurizio Sarri’s side visit 18th-place Cardiff City on Sunday, in a must-win game for the Blues.
