Bayern Munich could drop asking price for Chelsea transfer target

Coming out of the Club World Cup triumph, many Chelsea fans, as well as pundits, had thought that this was the season that the team would take the next step forward and establish themselves as contenders in England and Europe. That has not happened.

Chelsea seem stuck in the same situation that they have found themselves in for the last few years. Champions League qualification is looking tough. Premier League contention is out of reach. And they have been inconsistent throughout the campaign.

A large section of the support has been calling out for the club to add some experience and proven quality to their young squad. Will that happen in the summer? Some reports seem to suggest so.

Defence is one area where Chelsea must definitely strengthen in the summer transfer window. A Bayern Munich centre-back is rumoured to be on their radar. And the Bavarians might make things easier for the Blues.

According to Fussballdaten, Bayern Munich have signalled their openness to offers for Kim Min-jae. The Bundesliga giants’ main goal is to achieve a transfer fee in the range of €35-40 million. However, according to insiders, the amount could drop to around €30 million if offers include immediate payment.

The report further goes on to state that English clubs are leading the race for the Bayern Munich centre-back. Chelsea want to fill the leadership role in defence with Kim. On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur have shortlisted the South Korean international to play alongside Micky van de Ven.

Would Kim be a good signing for Chelsea?

Back at Napoli, Kim was considered the best defender in Serie A. He has never matched those heights since joining Bayern Munich though. That is a major reason the club seem open to his exit after just three years in Bavaria.

Would he be the right signing for Chelsea at the moment? Kim would certainly bring the experience that they are missing at the back. At 29, he should have plenty left in the tank as well.

That being said, would it be a good idea to sign someone who has never met expectations at Bayern Munich? It is very possible that he could struggle at Chelsea as well. Many Bundesliga standouts have. Names like Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Jadon Sancho and Christopher Nkunku come to mind.

One thing is for sure, if Chelsea sign Kim, it would mark a change in their transfer approach. That would definitely be a step in the right direction.
