It is very clear that Chelsea need to strengthen their squad if they want to compete for the biggest prizes in football. The Club World Cup win had given the fans confidence that the Blues were moving in the right direction. Unfortunately, that might have been misplaced. This season has been another reminder of their shortcomings.
A lack of consistency, disciplinary issues and the ability to finish off games or hold on to leads has left Chelsea in chasing Champions League qualification again. In cup competitions, it is hard to see a clear pathway to silverware.
Chelsea have never really taken the next step that has been promised for years. This young squad was expected to grow and develop into winners. But for years into the project, it feels like they are moving in circles.
Of course, this will make it tougher for Chelsea to attract talent, if they can’t show any success for their project. On the other hand, their current crop of players might start eyeing the exit door as well.
Real Madrid linked with move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez again
As reported by The Touchline, Real Madrid are willing to go all in for Enzo Fernandez. But his World Cup performance will be the ultimate test.
Fernandez has been linked with Real Madrid, going back to his days at Benfica. Chelsea did well to sign him straight after the 2022 World Cup. There would have been increased competition if they had not made their move until the summer.
Fernandez has now spent more than three years at Chelsea. In that time, he has developed into one of the club’s most important players. The Blues cannot really afford to let him go. But if the Argentine pushes for an exit, it might be hard to keep him.
Fernandez’s changing role at Chelsea over the years
Fernandez was always considered a phenomenal talent. But he has certainly developed as a player over his time at Chelsea.
When Fernandez was signed, he was brought in as someone who could control the game from the middle of the park. And he played that role for a while, to mixed effect.
It is under Enzo Maresca that he developed into a box-crashing midfielder. As a result, his output has been multiplied. In fact, Fernandez is one of Chelsea’s most potent options going forward these days. That has not changed under Liam Rosenior. So, rumours of Real Madrid’s interest will come as a worry for the club.
