Chelsea sources provide update on Cole Palmer’s need for surgery

One of the biggest problems Chelsea have faced this season is the downturn of Cole Palmer’s form. A lot of that might be down to his fitness issues. The England international has dealt with a variety of injuries already, and it has clearly had an effect on his performances on the pitch.

Palmer was arguably the best player in the Premier League during his first season-and-a-half at Chelsea. Since then, we have never really seen him at his best. Of course, there have been flashes.

He was instrumental in winning both of Chelsea’s trophies last season. He assisted twice against Real Betis, when the Blues were a goal down to the Spaniards. Then, in the Club World Cup final, he had his best game in the Royal Blue jersey. He scored two brilliant goals and provided an assist, blowing away PSG almost single-handedly.

Those performances were proof of Palmer’s quality. Unfortunately, it is the consistency that has been missing for more than a year now. There is a growing idea amongst fans that undergoing surgery might be the best route for him. Yes, he will miss some immediate action. But having him back at his best in the future would be worth it.

Palmer himself has suggested that he does not feel that he is fully fit. He had said after his hattrick against Wolves last month: “I am still not there physically but I hope with the medical staff here that I will come back and show my level again.”

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea sources, both privately and publicly, have denied that Palmer requires any surgical intervention.

Palmer’s downturn in form has come at the worst possible time

Palmer’s struggles have come at a bad time for both the player and the club. After winning the Club World Cup, the hope was that Chelsea would kick on and establish themselves as contenders in England and Europe this season. Without their best player performing, that has not happened.

On an individual level, Palmer’s place in the World Cup squad for England is now up in the air. If included, there is little chance Thomas Tuchel will start him over in-form number 10s.

Unsurprisingly, some Chelsea exit rumours have cropped up as well. There have been suggestions that he is homesick and is eyeing a move back up north.

Manchester United have been linked with Palmer, the club he grew up supporting. Let’s see if there is any truth to the speculation.
