‘Chelsea will sign’ – Fabrizio Romano names one transfer Blues will make

It is quite clear that this Chelsea squad is not good enough. After the Club World Cup win in the summer, the Blues were expected to take the next step and challenge for trophies. That has not happened. Instead, they seem to be going around circles under BlueCo. Deep into March, once again, the aim seems to be to qualify for the Champions League.

After losing to Newcastle United at home, even that might be slipping out of Chelsea’s fingers. In this tight a race, one win in the last five Premier League outings is not good enough.

Fans will be hoping that Chelsea make some quality additions to their squad this summer. There are quite a few areas on the pitch where they are not good enough.

Signing a starter-level centre-back and goalkeeper feels like the need of the hour, at least to me. But it looks like Chelsea have their eyes on strengthening the midfield department.

Fabrizio Romano names one transfer signing Chelsea will make this summer

While speaking on YouTube about the upcoming summer transfer market, Fabrizio Romano said: “City will sign a midfielder, United will sign one, maybe two, Arsenal will sign a midfielder, Chelsea will sign a midfielder. Let’s see what happens with all the other clubs, from PSG to Bayern, in Spain, in short, there will be a lot of movement among midfielders.”

So, it looks like midfielders will be high demand this summer. Chelsea are seemingly looking for one, even though it is one of their best departments at the moment.

What does this mean for Chelsea’s current midfielders?

Does this mean that an exit is on the way? If so, Romeo Lavia might very well be on the way out. I have no doubts about the Belgian midfielder’s qualities. On his day, he is phenomenal. But in sports, availability is the best quality. He has rarely been available since joining Chelsea, dealing with one injury after another. That is not someone the club can continue to rely on.

At the same time, it could very well mean that Chelsea are on the look out for another number 10. Unfortunately, Cole Palmer has struggled this season. He looks like a shell of the player that took the Premier League by storm a couple of years. Of course, injuries are to blame for that. That being said, it is up to the Blues to find a solution.

In the summer, they were linked with the likes of Xavi Simons and Fermin Lopez. So, that is a profile most certainly on their radar. A versatile player capable of playing as a number 10 and come in from the flank. The links with Morgan Rogers have never gone away. Could that be something on the cards?

Earlier today, I also reported about Chelsea’s rumoured interest in RC Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare. The 23-year-old has completed the most tackles in Ligue 1 this season. He is someone who would fit the profile of player the Blues have consistently signed under the BlueCo model.
