It is abundantly clear that Chelsea will need to strengthen their squad this summer. For the last four seasons, the talk has been about this team developing together into champions. But there is little to show for it so far, except for a Club World Cup.
We have seen the entire squad being revamped under BlueCo. Several managers have been changed as well. Now, it is high time that the hierarchy thinks about changing the structure that they have put in place since the takeover.
Signing just high potential players while completely overlooking the need for experience has proven to be a mistake. Initially, the talk had been about BlueCo needing four transfer windows to put together one of the best teams in Europe. Four seasons have passed. That is an eternity in football.
The time for change is now. Hopefully, the 8-2 aggregate defeat against PSG showed exactly where Chelsea stand in the pecking order of top teams in world football. This summer transfer window will show us a lot about whether BlueCo are willing to change, or if they will just double down on what is looking like a doomed strategy.
Chelsea register interest in Eduardo Camavinga but Liverpool leading race
According to TEAMtalk, intermediaries acting on behalf of Camavinga have begun briefing clubs that the midfielder will be available for transfer this summer. Liverpool are currently leading the race to sign the Real Madrid player, but Manchester United and Chelsea have also registered their early interest.
Chelsea had been linked with Camavinga back when he was at Rennes. Ultimately, he ended up joining Real Madrid in 2021 and has made over 200 appearances for the club since then. But with Los Blancos seemingly looking to revamp the squad, his time at Santiago Bernabeu might come to an end soon.
Would Camavinga solve Chelsea’s problems?
Camavinga’s biggest strength is his ability to play all across the pitch. He has played as a central midfielder, defensive midfielder, left-back and even as a winger for Real Madrid.
That being said, he has never quite managed to establish himself as a nailed-on starter for the club. He has always remained an option who is brought in wherever help is needed.
That does not mean that he has not been in the first-team mix. When available, Camavinga almost always plays, whether as a starter or off the bench. Also, he has a decent bit of experience under his belt, even at just 23 years of age.
The stats back Camavinga up as well. He is in the top 10% bracket when it comes to successful passes, successful pass percentage, accurate long ball percentage, duels won, duels won percentage, touches, tackles and goals conceded while on the pitch. So, he can do a bit of everything.
Someone like Camavinga would not solve all of Chelsea’s problems. But signing him would be a step in the right direction, that is for sure.
