Chelsea seem to be in all kinds of trouble at the moment, especially after being knocked out of the Champions League. The Blues lost 8-2 on aggregate against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16. The chances in the other competitions aren’t looking too bright either for Liam Rosenior’s side.
So, there’s a real possibility that Chelsea might end the season without any trophies being added to the cabinet. Nevertheless, the board is expected to spring into action as soon as the transfer window opens to improve their squad, regardless of the results this campaign. A few names have already popped up as potential targets.
However, there’s bad news on that front as well, with reports suggesting that Brighton & Hove Albion is close to finalising a deal for a player who was on Chelsea’s radar.
According to BILD, Brighton are prepared to significantly increase their offer for Said El Mala. A transfer fee of around €35 million plus bonuses and a percentage of any future sale are being discussed. The player is also reportedly in agreement with the proposed terms. He could earn around €20 million with the Seagulls over the next five years, including potential bonuses.
Reason behind Said El Mala choosing Brighton over Chelsea
El Mala recently switched agents and is now represented by his parents. Additionally, the Seagulls are also said to be willing to sign his elder sibling, Malek El Mala, who plays for FC Koln’s under-21 side, which might have played a role in decision-making as well.
El Mala has played a key part for FC Koln this season, having appeared in 28 matches, scoring nine goals and providing four assists. The 19-year-old is primarily a left winger, although he can also operate on the right flank as well as in the centre-forward role. Needless to say, he could have been a good signing for the Blues.
Chelsea, who few would argue have the better project overall, will now have to look elsewhere for other alternatives. Honestly speaking, that shouldn’t be much of an issue.
Way forward for the Blues
Chelsea had already signed two left-wingers in the last summer window in the form of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens. But unfortunately, neither of them has lived up to expectations so far.
As a result, maybe it’s time for the Blues to shake things up a bit in their transfer policy. They should turn their focus to someone with experience under his belt, rather than bringing in another untested, raw talent.
El Mala would fall in the latter category. So, failing to sign him should not be viewed as a major blow for the Blues.
