Chelsea board’s Liam Rosenior decision amid growing sack rumours

Despite all that has changed at Chelsea since the BlueCo takeover, one thing that has remained constant is the club’s inability to stick with a manager. Thomas Tuchel was sacked weeks into Clearlake-Boehly’s debut campaign, and that trend has continued. Graham Potter did not see out the season. Frank Lampard was brought in as interim boss and had a horrible run. Mauricio Pochettino showed signs of promise towards the end but parted ways after just one season, potentially because of differences behind the scenes. Enzo Maresca lasted a season-and-a-half, despite winning two trophies and securing Champions League qualification.

So, when Liam Rosenior was appointed as manager, not many gave him a chance of succeeding. He really did not have the resume for a job of this magnitude. His previous two stints had been at Hull City and Strasbourg.

To be fair, he made a decent start. But that was mostly due to moments of individual brilliance getting Chelsea out of trouble rather than the team performing as a whole. Runs like that do not last. Unsurprisingly, that one did not either.

Chelsea find themselves in a world of trouble right now. And there have been rumours recently that certain people on the board have their doubts regarding Rosenior already, and don’t expect him at the club next season. How accurate is that speculation?

Chelsea board’s stance on Rosenior amid growing sack rumours

I have always maintained that Chelsea won’t sack Rosenior anytime soon, even if he fails to qualify for the Champions League. Sacking the Englishman would be equivalent to admitting that they got it completely wrong once again. Not too many might be keen to do that.

According to the Daily Mail (via Metro), Rosenior’s position is not under threat. Reports claiming the Chelsea board are already losing patience with their manager are wide of the mark. He is said to maintain a good relationship with the club’s shot callers while the squad remain behind him as well.

Rosenior will continue at Stamford Bridge for the time being

That sounds very similar to the briefings we used to receive during Potter’s time as manager of Chelsea, when things were going wrong. And the board did give him enough time as well. Ultimately though, he was shown the exit door when there was no salvaging the situation.

It might take that for the club to sack Rosenior as well. The problem is, this time around, that might arrive a lot quicker.

Fans have run out of patience with the BlueCo project. When was the last time so many left with 30 minutes to go on a Champions League night?

Four years in, they have little to nothing to show for their structure and transfer model. But it looks like they are willing to stick to their ways rather than make some adjustments. Just look at the players the club have been linked with lately. A move for Valentin Barco is believed to be close. The likes of Mateus Mane and Kees Smit are rumoured to be potential replacements for Enzo Fernandez, if he leaves. Does that sound like a club rethinking its approach?
