What does the future hold for Enzo Fernandez? Well, nobody appears to know for sure. Reports had emerged in Argentina that suggested that a Stamford Bridge exit in the summer was very much a possibility. The midfielder himself did not rule anything out when asked about it. Liam Rosenior suggested that the Argentine was completely committed to Chelsea and that his comments had been misconstrued. And it is also believed that the Blues want to keep him.
Fernandez is one of Chelsea’s most important players. Not only is he a key cog in the middle of the park but he is also a consistent producer of goals and assists.
Chelsea cannot afford to lose Fernandez at this point in time. The long-term contract does give them some security. But when it comes to modern football, when players don’t want to stay, it is almost impossible for things to continue as is.
If Fernandez is intent on leaving, then it will probably happen. And Chelsea must be prepared for that scenario. Who could replace the Argentine at Stamford Bridge?
Two potential replacements for Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea
Finding an out-and-out replacement for Fernandez won’t be simple. He brings an equal profile to the table, especially after adding goals to his game by becoming a box-crashing midfielder. So, Chelsea might need to look at alternative soltutions.
Nizaar Kinsella was asked during a Q&A session on BBC Sport regarding suitable replacements for Fernandez:
First of all, I am inclined to say he will stay at Chelsea, particularly if they qualify for the Champions League next season.
Enzo Fernandez would be a significant loss, given he is almost always available and is behind only Joao Pedro for goal involvements in all competitions this season. His ability to operate as both a number six and a number 10 underlines how difficult he would be to replace.
There are likely to be several midfielders on the market this summer, potentially including England internationals Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton.
Neither Anderson nor Wharton would be a suitable replacement for Fernandez
Both Anderson and Wharton are quality midfielders and it would take a significant transfer fee to sign them. But neither would be a proper replacement for Fernandez.
Fernandez is brilliant when it comes to the offensive side of the game. He has contributed consistently with both goals and assists. His overall passing range is excellent as well. And while he is one of the best on the defensive side of the game, he does his bit, and puts in an effort in the middle of the park.
Neither Anderson nor Wharton is anywhere close when it comes to those things. But they would add a steel to Chelsea’s midfield though, something that they seem to be missing at times and are easily passed by as a result.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Fernandez at Chelsea. It will end up deciding how the club tackle this summer transfer window. If he stays, the Blues can concentrate on strengthening other areas of the pitch.
