Signing a new goalkeeper should be at the top of the wish list at Chelsea. The club should be aware by now that neither of their first choices is good enough to be a starter. Robert Sanchez has been the number for the majority of the BlueCo era. And on his day, the Spaniard is an excellent goalie. Unfortunately, his inconsistency is his biggest weakness.
Sanchez seems to be someone who is very dependent on confidence. He has started the season so well that it looked like Chelsea finally had their number one position sorted. But in recent months, his form has dipped badly. He is back to making poor mistakes and costing the team goals.
On the other hand, Filip Jorgensen is not much better. For a little while, it had looked like Liam Rosenior wanted to make him the new number one. But he flopped his audition against PSG badly.
Since then, Chelsea have been linked with quite a few goalkeepers. One of them is Robin Roefs of Southampton, arguably the best goalie in the Premier League this season. But he is not the only one on their radar. Another option is AS Roma’s Mile Svilar. And the Blues have been handed a boost in that pursuit.
Chelsea handed transfer boost in race to sign Mile Svilar from AS Roma
Just like Chelsea, AS Roma are also in a tough spot right now. They are sixth in the Serie A table. And the teams around them are in much better form. As a result, they face a steep climb if they want to finish in the Champions League spots.
According to Siamo la Roma, without Champions League football, it will be inevitable to let some of the big names go. This includes Svilar. Followed by Newcastle United and Chelsea, in the face of a €50 million offer, the Italian club would also falter because it would be a dry capital gain.
It is worth mentioning here that Svilar joined AS Roma as a free agent. Since then, he has established himself not only as the starting goalkeeper but also as one of the best in Europe.
Would Svilar be the goalkeeper to solve Chelsea’s problems?
Svilar is very highly rated in Italy. In fact, he has been linked with both Inter Milan and Juventus in recent times. But would he be what Chelsea need at the moment?
Well, he is an excellent shot-stopper. He has a save percentage of over 76% this season, which is better than Roefs’ 71%. Also, Svilar’s numbers are great when it comes to passing, distribution and commanding the box.
On paper, Svilar looks exactly like the goalkeeper that the club need right now. All those years ago, Liverpool signed a goalie from AS Roma, who the Blues also wanted, and he became integral to their golden era under Jurgen Klopp.
Signing Svilar could have a similar impact on Chelsea. That being said, there have to be a few doubts as well. What would it mean for the long-term development of Mike Penders? And would the Serbian international be able to make the adjustment to the Premier League? He has been phenomenal in Italy, but their national team has not made three World Cups in a row. That has raised questions about the strength of Serie A as a whole.
