Chelsea are staring down at another trophyless season if they can’t manage to lift the FA Cup. It has undoubtedly been a disappointing campaign for the Blues. The squad underwent a number of changes in the summer, but the problems haven’t been solved.
That said, injuries have played a huge role in Chelsea’s recent struggles, especially in defence. The absence of Levi Colwill has clearly left its mark on the team. Other have failed to step up to the plate and fill his void in the heart of the backline.
The management will be eager to bolster their backline once the transfer window opens. It looks like they have already started shortlisting some centre-backs as potential targets. This includes a former Real Madrid youngster as well. However, the Blues are not alone in the race, as their city rivals are also monitoring the player.
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea are considering signing Como youngster Jacobo Ramon to strengthen their defence. Meanwhile, the Blues will face competition from Arsenal, who have also stepped up their interest in the Spanish centre-back.
Jacobo Ramon linked with Chelsea and Arsenal
Ramon has been one of the standout performers in Como’s defence this season. The youngster has made 30 appearances while scoring two goals as well.
The Real Madrid academy graduate moved to the Italian side before the start of this campaign. Notably, Los Blancos hold both a buy-back and a 50% sell-on clause for the youngster.
As a result, Chelsea might have to shell out a significant fee to secure the player. Interest from Arsenal could further drive the asking price up and result in a tug-of-war scenario.
Meanwhile, Ramon has already played six times for Real Madrid, who are themselves facing a crisis in defence. So a return to the Santiago Bernabeu cannot be completely ruled out either. In that case, Chelsea won’t have any control over the situation.
Chelsea need some experienced stars in their squad
Ever since Thiago Silva left the Blues, the club have failed to find someone who can provide leadership to and marshal the backline. This has held back the team on multiple occasions.
So even if Chelsea do intend to sign Ramon, the club should also look to bring in a proven name alongside him. The defence is struggling currently and needs an experienced leader to fix that.
The next transfer window will certainly be a busy one for Chelsea. So it will be better if they manage to qualify for the Champions League and potentially win the FA Cup as well. That would put them in a better financial position to achieve their objectives in the summer.
