Chelsea might be looking to strengthen their midfield this summer. Enzo Fernandez’s future remains uncertain, although his agent has played down recent events. On the other hand, there have to be question marks over the future of Romeo Lavia as well. He has spent the majority of his three seasons with the club out injured.
There have been whispers lately of Chelsea recruiting experienced and proven players this summer, which is what the fans have been calling for for quite some time. Now, it remains to be seen if that unfolds in the transfer window or not.
Recent reports suggest that Chelsea could be looking to add to their options in the middle of the park. And a German international has caught their eye.
Chelsea enter race to sign seven-time German international
According to BILD (via Bulinews), Chelsea have entered the race to sign Angelo Stiller. The Blues have begun closely monitoring the VfB Stuttgart midfielder. The German international has also been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
It has also been claimed that VfB Stuttgart would be open to considering offers in the region of €50 million. Let’s see if Chelsea make their move.
VfB Stuttgart are enjoying one of their best seasons in a long time. They are currently fourth in the Bundesliga, and level on points with RB Leipzig in third. Stiller’s form has been central to that success. He has one goal and 10 assists to his name this season.
Could Stiller replace Fernandez in midfield?
It is worth noting that Stiller is a deep-lying playmaker. He is one of the best volume passers in Europe right now with an elite range. He can control a game from midfield. It is hard not to draw comparisons with someone like Toni Kroos.
That is the role Fernandez played for Chelsea early on before transforming into a box-crashing midfielder under Enzo Maresca. There is a similarity in their profile though. So, are the Blues viewing the German international as a replacement for the Argentine World Cup winner?
Time shall tell. Chelsea do need to add some quality to their squad for sure. But midfield might be their strongest department at this time. If Fernandez leaves, it would be a different story.
As things stand, if there is a kind of midfielder Chelsea need, it is a physical presence who will break up play and outmuscle opponents. That is the profile the Blues are missing at the moment. Stiller is not that kind of player.
