Chelsea’s problems multiplied on Sunday as they lost 3-0 at home against Manchester City. The result was a reflection of how far away they are from challenging in the Premier League. In the previous season, it was thought that two or three quality signings would make the Blues contenders again. I am not so sure that is the case anymore.
Chelsea might not make the Champions League next season. In fact, it is looking likely that they won’t be based on current form. In fact, they might miss out on European football altogether. Liam Rosenior looks completely out of his depth, but briefings continue to suggest that BlueCo don’t plan to sack him. His first review is planned for the summer of 2027.
Chelsea will look to significantly strengthen their squad in the summer window. But one has to question whether it is possible to be successful with their transfer strategy.
A Liverpool player seems to be on Chelsea’s sights right now, if reports are accurate. But it is not even a starter, which goes to show the issue with this entire transfer model.
Chelsea eyeing move Liverpool midfielder who is not starting enough
Liverpool have endured a poor season by their own standards, although they remain on course to qualify for the Champions League. But even then, this summer could be on of change for the Reds.
Arne Slot has been linked with a move away. Xabi Alonso has been suggested as his potential replacement. And quite a few players could be headed for the exit door as well.
It looks like the Blues have their eyes on such player, who could be on his way out of Anfield. According to Football FanCast, Chelsea have made contact about a deal for Liverpool’s Curtis Jones.
Curtis Jones move shows everything wrong with Chelsea strategy
Jones is a decent midfielder. He has played his fair share of football for Liverpool. He made 19 starts in the Premier League last season, when they lifted the trophy.
That being said, is Jones the type of player who will come in and transform Chelsea? I do not think so. He is going to be a decent rotational option at best.
That goes to show the difference between Chelsea and other top teams at the moment. When Manchester United looked to strengthen, they signed the best players from Brentford and Wolves. Man City did the same with Bournemouth and Crystal Palace in the winter. The Blues want a bench player from Liverpool.
The only way Chelsea will get back to competing with the best is if they change their transfer strategy. If they stick with this BlueCo model, it is very likely they will stay where they have been for the past four seasons. Sacking Rosenior won’t change that. No manager might be capable of delivering under these circumstances.
