Manchester City handed Chelsea a 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. It was their fifth win in the last six outings at the ground. That just proves the difference that exists between the two clubs right now. And the result might have ended the Blues’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
That will come as a blow for Chelsea, who posted a loss of over £250 million for the 24/25 season. They cannot really afford to miss the Champions League again. But the way things are going, they might not even make any European competition in the upcoming campaign.
They are closer to the 11th spot right now than the 5th. And Liam Rosenior’s side only seem to be getting worse with time. They have gone scoreless in three Premier League games, losing all of them, for the first time since 1998. The Blues have won just one of their last seven outings in the league. And overall, since the start of February, three of their last five wins have come against lower-league opposition.
Naturally, fans are calling for Rosenior to be shown the exit door. Understandably so, as the manager has not shown anything to suggest that he is capable of succeeding at Stamford Bridge, no matter the promises he continues to make in the media. That being said, the problems at Chelsea go far deeper than him.
Chelsea eyeing move for quality Manchester City player who is not playing enough
BlueCo have put together a poorly thought-out squad. Their current vision does not look likely to ever work out. They need to make adjustments as soon as possible, hopefully, this summer. And interestingly, it looks like one of Manchester City’s players is on their radar.
According to journalist Simon Phillips on Si Phillips talks Chelsea (via The Chelsea Chronicle), the club are monitoring James Trafford’s situation at Manchester City ahead of potentially making a move for him in the summer.
Trafford was signed by Man City in the summer. But when the opportunity arose to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma, they did not miss out either. Would Chelsea have done that?
Anyways, it meant that Trafford has been the second-choice goalkeeper at Man City this season, even though he has been phenomenal when given a chance. The Englishman looks set to leave in the summer. And it looks like Chelsea could make their move, if that happens.
Trafford could be an excellent signing for Chelsea
Trafford has the quality to be an excellent addition to this Chelsea team. He is Premier League-proven. And someone like him would improve the Blues between the posts for sure.
Chelsea’s problems with goalkeeping are not unknown. Robert Sanchez has never convinced that he is the long-term solution there. Filip Jorgensen has struggled when given the chance as well.
What would signing Trafford mean for the future of Mike Penders? Well, it is about time that Chelsea start thinking about the present for a change.
