Liam Rosenior is currently going through a nightmare run as Chelsea manager. The club, in a tight Champions League qualification race, have won one of their last seven Premier League matches. They have lost their last five against top-flight teams. They have not scored in their previous three outings in the league for the first time since 1998.
Things are getting bad for Chelsea. Historically bad. And this is already starting to feel like the final phase of the Graham Potter era.
Briefings are coming out that Chelsea are backing Rosenior and will stick with him. That being said, it is a results-based business. And after a certain point, even BlueCo would have to make a tough decision. Like they had to Potter.
The loss against Manchester City showed the gap that exists between a top Premier League team and Chelsea right now. And it might not be possible to bridge that, with Rosenior in the hot seat. He has shown nothing to suggest that he is the right man for the job. But what is the club’s stance on sacking him?
Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea’s stance on sacking Liam Rosenior after 3-0 loss to Manchester City
The result against Manchester City might have been the final indication that Chelsea won’t be making the Champions League next season. They are now closer to 11th than 5th.
In a previous era, Rosenior would have been shown the exit door by now. Unfortunately, those times seem to be gone for good.
Fabrizio Romano said while talking on his YouTube channel about Chelsea’s stance on sacking Rosenior following the club’s one-sided defeat at the hands of Manchester City:
“Chelsea maintain that they want to back and trust the manager, Liam Rosenior. This is the message coming from the club. It’s a difficult moment for Chelsea, for sure, but they don’t forget that the manager arrived in January and so it’s not the same of having preseason and preparing your own team. This is what Chelsea feel.
“Then obviously, guys, we are in an industry, results, in obviously in an industry that is always linked to results, and so we have to understand how will be the end of the season for Chelsea. Of course, this is going to be important to understand more on the manager, but at the moment the message coming from Chelsea, even after a bad defeat against Manchester City, is that they want to trust this manager.”
Chelsea sticking with Liam Rosenior might not be smart
It is true that Rosenior has not had a pre-season and arrived in the middle of the season. But that cannot be an excuse for continuously bad results. Instead of improving, things have gotten worse over time. That is not the sign of a good manager.
Thomas Tuchel arrived in worse conditions and won Chelsea the Champions League, while securing a top four finish and making it to the FA Cup final. That is a top manager that BlueCo decided to let go months after taking over.
Since then, it has been all downhill for the club. The ownership have made one mistake after another. And if they choose to stick with Rosenior beyond this season, they might just be adding to their troubles in the short and long run.
