Chelsea will fail to sign top target this summer for two reasons

It is no secret that Chelsea will need to strengthen this summer. This squad is not good enough to even qualify for the Champions League, forget competing at that level. A lot has been made about Liam Rosenior. Understandably so, as he has been poor since arriving in January. That being said, just changing the manager might not be enough for the Blues, even if it proves to be part of the solution.

The transfer model that BlueCo have put in place might not be capable of producing success at the highest level. The club have heavily invested in signing youngsters. But at the same time, they need to bring in some experienced players as well in order to find the right balance. They have not done that over the past four seasons and the results are in front of us.

Another thing that might be stopping Chelsea from signing top players is their wage structure. And it looks like they might end up missing out on one of their top targets this summer.

According to Simon Phillips, a source has said that Chelsea signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa is massively unlikely. That is because other clubs are willing to pay more in wages and fees overall than the Blues are.

Chelsea look set to miss out on signing Morgan Rogers

Chelsea have been linked with Rogers for quite some time now. The England international has been able to establish himself as one of the best in the Premier League.

Aston Villa are currently ahead of Chelsea in the race to qualify for the Champions League. Rogers has played his part in that.

He signed an extension with Aston Villa recently but that might not prevent him from leaving this summer. But if he does, there won’t be any lack of interest in his signature. Several of Premier League’s top clubs have been linked with the Englishman and Chelsea are likely to have a tough time competing with them in a transfer race right now.

What next for this BlueCo project?

One can only wonder where this BlueCo project is headed from here. After it had looked like the club was moving in the right direction, they are right back to square one after sacking Enzo Maresca.

It is more likely that they will finish in the bottom half of the table than qualify for the Champions League. That should not be the case, four years into the BlueCo project.

Unfortunately, it is hard to see how they will turn things around either. The club have posted record losses, they were fined by UEFA last summer and will need to work within financial constraints. Also, if they want to sign top players, they will need to compete with the wages on offer at other clubs.
