Another game. Another defeat. And another blank in front of goal. It is a story we are seeing repeatedly at Chelsea under Liam Rosenior. Common sense suggests there is no way back for him. After tonight’s result, it is hard to imagine the Blues will qualify for the Champions League. It is a lot more likely that they will miss out on European competitions altogether.
I do not expect Chelsea to sack Rosenior before the season is over. But if results continue on this path, BlueCo might have no other choice, no matter how much there is talk about a performance review not taking place until 2027, the team needing pre-season and signing ‘ready-made’ players in the summer.
Rosenior might be well-liked by the board and the players. But at the end of the day, it is results that matter more than anything else at a club like Chelsea.
Some of them have been nowhere near what is expected of the Blues. Chelsea have now lost six in a row against top-flight opponents. They have not even scored in last five of those games. In the Premier League, they are winless and goalless for four matches on the trot. These are numbers we did not see even in the final weeks of the Graham Potter era. That is how bad things have gotten under Rosenior. It just that the supporters are now a lot more used to dealing with poor results.
What did Liam Rosenior say after another Chelsea defeat?
Chelsea can take a few positives from the game against Manchester United. They had the lion’s share of the ball. And they struck the post on multiple occasions. Luck was not on their side on the day.
According to NBC Sports, Rosenior said after the game:
“It’s so difficult. Today to give up one shot on target when we’re down to 10 men on a restart [and concede] and we have wave after wave of attack and hit the woodwork four times… I don’t want my team to feel like everything’s against it.”
It is also worth noting that Chelsea conceded against Manchester United while Wesley Fofana was out for treatment. But Rosenior did not make any kind of excuse. He said:
“We can still do better. Many teams play with 10 men. I think it’s their only shot but we have to defend better. We don’t and we get punished. Any small mistake we’re making at the moment seems to end up in the back of my net. It has to change.”
When asked about what he felt the team needed to do, the Chelsea manager said:
“We just need to win the next game. We can’t think of other teams but worry about ourselves and get in bright in early tomorrow to make it right.”
BlueCo need to accept error and move on
It would be safe to say that BlueCo have made their fair share of errors over the last four years. That is the biggest reason why Chelsea find themselves in this position.
The decision to sack Enzo Maresca and hire Rosenior as his replacement will most likely go down as one of their biggest errors. But BlueCo need to accept that error and move on from it. They cannot allow to prolong this period. It is doing nothing for the club or their relationship with the fans.
There was fan protest against BlueCo outside of Stamford Bridge before the game against Manchester United. And one would imagine that the disgruntlement has only grown since then.
Rosenior seems completely out of his depth in the Chelsea job. What the club need right now is a proven winner in the hot seat. And he needs to be brought in and allowed a major say in the summer transfer plans to rebuild this faltering squad.
