Liam Rosenior’s time as Chelsea manager is quickly turning into a bit of a nightmare. He is matching records, but all of the wrong ones. The Blues have now lost four Premier League games on the trot without scoring a single goal. The last time that happened was in 1998. More than 28 years ago!
The last time Chelsea lost five league games without scoring was back in 1912. Their next matchup is against Brighton & Hove Albion. And Rosenior will be hoping to avoid matching that feat.
Whether he does or not, it is very clear that a large portion of the fanbase have already given up on him. And to be fair, the Englishman has shown nothing to earn their trust.
According to Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail, after full-time, Rosenior paraded the Stamford Bridge pitch to show his appreciation to the few Chelsea fans who had stayed back. But when he approached the Matthew Harding Stand, it became abundantly clear that the feeling was not mutual. What the manager received in return were boos and instructions telling him where to go.
Chelsea have lost their identity under BlueCo
When BlueCo took over at Chelsea in 2022, one of the most questionable decisions that they made was to try and change pretty much everything about the club. They moved away from signing experienced players. They also did not seem keen on hiring proven winning managers.
Gone was the winning machine that was Chelsea for the previous two decades. The most successful football project of the 21st century in English football. It was replaced by a team that seemed soft and incapable of getting the job done against other top clubs.
Over the past four years, Chelsea have lost their identity as a club. They can’t even score a goal at the moment, having gone goalless in their last five games against top division opposition, forget about winning. One can only hope that BlueCo have realised by now how badly they have gotten things wrong.
What does the future hold for Rosenior, sporting directors and BlueCo?
There were fan protests outside of Stamford Bridge before the game against Manchester United. And the discontent only grew over the course of the day, as Chelsea stumbled to another defeat. It has become somewhat of a habit by now.
Chelsea continue to publicly back Rosenior. There is the suggestion that giving him a pre-season will sort out their problems. In my humble opinion, it won’t. So far, he has shown nothing to suggest that he is capable of succeeding in a job of this magnitude. And to be frank, he never had the resume for it and seems out of his depth.
Of course, just changing managers is not the answer for Chelsea. They have now failed under multiple different ones. It is about time that the club look deeper.
What about the performance of the sporting directors? There has been no lack of investment in the squad but they can’t even score a goal or win a game right now.
The fans’ patience with BlueCo has run out. There have been suggestions that they will tweak their policy. Yes, not even change, but ‘tweak’. A large part of the fanbase is worried though that the damage has already been done.
