When Enzo Fernandez had to come off late in the game against Manchester United, Chelsea fans were not the only ones to be left worried about his injury. The midfielder is an integral part of the Argentina starting XI heading into the World Cup as Lionel Messi’s side look to defend their crown this summer. Naturally, they would have been left holding their collective breath as well.

After the game, Liam Rosenior said that it had something to do with his calf. The Chelsea manager was hoping that it was just a cramp.

Of course, considering how Chelsea’s luck has been going lately, it would not have been a surprise if the issue turned out to be a serious injury. Fortunately, it looks like Fernandez has avoided that.

Reports have emerged in his homeland regarding his status. According to reliable Argentine journalist, Gaston Edul, Fernandez came off due to fatigue. He has no injury.

Edul is the journalist who broke the news about there being chances that Fernandez could leave Chelsea in the summer. So, he seems to have good contacts when it comes to the Argentine midfielder’s camp.

Of course, this is great news for both Chelsea and the Argentine national team. The Blues need to go on a winning run if they want to somehow salvage the season and qualify for the Champions League. For that to happen, they will need Fernandez to be available. On the other hand, the World Cup if just around the corner and Lionel Scaloni’s side cannot afford to see one of their most important players go down now.

What does the long-term future hold for Fernandez at Chelsea?

Fernandez’s avoidance of injury is a welcome relief for Chelsea fans. That being said, what does the long-term future hold for him at Stamford Bridge?

There have been heavy rumours surrounding his situation and Fernandez has done nothing to play them down. Instead, he even went on to claim that Madrid is a city he would like to live in someday amid links with a move to the Bernabeu in the future.

Of course, BlueCo are believed to view him as a long-term part of this project. He has a long-term contract with Chelsea as well. That being said, it will be impossible to keep him at the club if he does not want to stay.

matchday.
