It is quite evident to most fans that Liam Rosenior’s time as Chelsea manager is as good as over. At this point, the most BlueCo can do is postpone the inevitable. But even they must have realised by now that things cannot go on in this manner. Five league defeats in a row without a goal scored and 11 conceded. That is the form the Blues are in right now. Their worst since 1912.
If there was any shred of hope for Rosenior to remain in the job, that might have ended with his comments following the Brighton game. The manager openly questioned the players’ desire and asked them to look in the mirror. It is quite likely that he realises that he has lost the dressing room. There is one way this story ends.
The only thing that could keep Rosenior in the job is how close we are to the end of the season. But even then, with the FA Cup still to play for, the Chelsea hierarchy might make a decision.
Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol has provided an update on the situation. It looks like discussions are underway about the future direction. There is no certainty that Rosenior will be in charge for the Leeds game on Sunday. As things stand, he remains the manager, but the situation could change. Chelsea players have the day off today.
Is this the right time to sack Rosenior?
The sacking is pretty inevitable. Earlier plans of giving him the pre-season and the entirety of the 26/27 season have to go out the window. That is nothing more than a pipe dream at this point.
Will he be in charge for the game against Leeds United? That is the question at hand. That is very much up to the board and what their aims are.
If they want to win the FA Cup, Rosenior should be sacked now. Chelsea will have a better chance with Calum McFarlane as interim boss.
If the club feel there is not much left to play for this season anyway, maybe they could keep Rosenior until the end of the season and hope that some kind of miracle happens between now and then.
Who should be the next manager of Chelsea?
So much has been said about Chelsea’s recruitment policy in recent times. But it is safe to say that the club’s managerial choices and decisions have been just as confusing.
They sacked Thomas Tuchel days after the 2022 summer transfer window closed. Of course, we all know how bad Graham Potter was at Chelsea. Mauricio Pochettino started poorly but did find his stride towards the end of his solitary season but was then shown the exit door. Enzo Maresca overdelivered and proved he could get results against top teams, only to be sacked in the middle of the season. Reports suggested it was largely due to disagreements behind the scenes.
The next manager needs to be a proven winner. Someone who knows how to deal with the pressure of top clubs. And he needs to be properly backed. He should have a real say in club matters as well, not just someone brought in to coach the team while others make whatever choices they feel like in the transfer market. Otherwise, sacking Rosenior won’t change much in terms of the long-term direction of Chelsea Football Club.
