It will be very interesting to see what kind of managers BlueCo end up targeting next. The current sporting directors are said to be leading the process. That update won’t convince the fans after we have seen over the last four years, as they have failed to deliver a competitive team despite spending north of a billion pounds.
So, it is hard to believe that their decision-making will suddenly improve drastically. That being said, it looks like Chelsea are continuing to back the sporting directors that they have.
One of the managers they have been linked with recently is Francesco Farioli. Of course, that is exactly the kind of name you would expect BlueCo to have on their sights.
Farioli might not be a household name but he is highly-regarded in footballing circles, and has been for a long time. He is currently the manager of FC Porto, who sit atop the Portuguese league table. Still just 37 years of age, he has already been at Nice and Ajax as well, and is one of the most promising coaches in Europe.
Farioli is not interested in Chelsea job
Unfortunately, after what we have seen unfold over the past four seasons, the Chelsea job has lost a lot of its lustre. This is no longer a club constantly competing for the biggest prizes in football. On the contrary, they are unlikely to even make the Champions League and might even end up finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
According to A Bola (via The Chelsea Chronicle), Farioli is not interested in taking over at Stamford Bridge. He believes that his ongoing project in Portugal is more important.
So, that rules another manager out of this race. Julian Nagelsmann is another who does not seem keen on heading to Chelsea either. And one would have to imagine who would be at this point in time. BlueCo have painted themselves into a corner here.
BlueCo need to change structure to attract new manager
If BlueCo want to bring in a top manager, they have to realise that they will have to concede some control over club matters. Someone of that level would want to have their say beyond just selecting the team on matchday.
The team needs to be built based on what they want. One could argue that the manager is the most important part of a team in modern football with how tactics-oriented the game has become. So, BlueCo need to get that choice right before thinking about anything else. This is where they have failed time and again.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea will make the necessary adjustments. Or if they will bring in another project manager, who will be little more than a placeholder.
