Some inside Chelsea pushing for club legend’s return

Share

In the four years since the BlueCo takeover, it feels like Chelsea have lost a large part of their identity. For decades, the Blues were known as the team that would find ways to win. Silverware was more of an expectation than an achievement. But all of that has evaporated under this new ownership.

Chelsea have won silverware in just one of their four seasons in charge. Of course, they are in the FA Cup final. But with Manchester City standing in their way, the Blues’ chances of winning are slim based on their current form.

It might be about time that the club start thinking about restoring some of their old identity. That starts with signing top-quality players and an elite manager to guide them. At the same time, it might mean reuniting with some familiar faces from the past.

John Terry is someone who is synonymous with Chelsea Football Club. He captained the club to all five of their Premier League titles as well as their first Champions League trophy. And there has been some talk about why he was overlooked for the interim managerial role after Liam Rosenior was sacked. Many feel that someone like him could have made sure this inexperienced squad realises what it means and takes to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

John Terry linked with Chelsea return out of nowhere

While Terry was not handed the interim role, it looks like the chance of him making a return to Chelsea is not completely ruled out.

On the contrary, according to CaughtOffside, whispers from inside the club’s boardroom suggest some voices are actively pushing for the return of Terry or Frank Lampard. The hope seems to be that their legendary status can inject some fighting spirit into a fragile dressing room.

Of course, if Lampard were to return, it would be as manager. He has already been in that role twice in the past, once in an interim capacity. On the other hand, there is little chance the same would be the case with Terry. The centre-back has never managed at the top level. But he could certainly be brought back in a coaching capacity.

Bringing back John Terry would be a great idea for BlueCo

Bringing in someone like Terry as a coach would not be a bad idea at all. There is no doubt about his leadership qualities. He would add that immediately.

At the same time, his presence would be appreciated by the supporters as well. It is a connection that has been in place for almost three decades. At a time when so much of the fanbase has grown frustrated and disillusioned, it would galvanise the support.

Now, it remains to be seen if BlueCo make any such move for Terry or this ends up being just another rumour that leads to nowhere of substance. Personally, I would hope it is the latter.
