With the summer transfer window just around the corner, rumours are cropping up left, right and centre. It is unsurprising that most of the talk surrounding Chelsea over the past week has been regarding the club’s next manager. Liam Rosenior was sacked after just 107 days in the job. Calum McFarlane is the interim boss until the end of the campaign.
Naturally, that has been the centre of focus when it comes to Chelsea. That being said, whoever is brought in as the next manager will struggle if not provided the right backing by the club.
Chelsea need to sign the right players this summer. But at the same time, they need to make sure that quality does not end up leaving the club. That will be difficult to do, considering they look set to miss out on Champions League football.
That could lead to the departure of plenty of key players, especially senior ones who would be keen to win now rather than wait for this project to work out eventually, if it ever does. One such player might be Marc Cucurella, who has publicly criticised the transfer model already.
Marc Cucurella would reportedly welcome move to FC Barcelona
According to Sport Witness, Cucurella would welcome a move to Barcelona. This is on the front page of today’s edition of Mundo Deportivo. The report goes on to add:
‘For him, a return to Barca would be a personal dream, a special motivation to come back to the club of his life as a more mature player.’
Cucurella came through the famous La Masia youth system. But he was not able to make the grade at FC Barcelona at the senior level.
It is not hard to understand why that might be a regret for Cucurella and why he might want a proper chance to prove himself at Barcelona. But considering the current financial circumstances, that might be a difficult one to pull off for his former club.
Chelsea must keep Cucurella if possible
It would be safe to say that Cucurella is one of Chelsea’s most important players right now. Not only does he have world-class quality, but he is also one of the few with top-level experience in the game. Also, at 27 years of age, he is only entering his prime on the pitch.
So, letting Cucurella leave at this point in time would be a misstep on the part of Chelsea. Unless it becomes absolutely necessary to let him go, the club should consider sticking with him for the foreseeable future.
Obviously, if the player starts pushing for an exit behind the scenes, then the picture will be very difficult. But for now, Chelsea need to hold their ground.
