If Chelsea want to add some quality players to their squad in the summer, they might need to part ways with some as well. Unfortunately, that is the financial reality at the moment. The club posted north of £260 million in losses for the 24/25 season. They were also fined by UEFA about a year back and will need to work under some constraints in order to avoid more in the future.
Obviously, there are quite a few players on the current roster who are not meeting expectations at the moment. At the end of the day, the poor recruitment has played a major role in Chelsea’s recent struggles on the pitch.
Even deals that had looked great at the time have proven to be poor decisions in hindsight. One such move was the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.
Signed for a £30 million transfer fee after Ipswich Town were relegated, it was viewed as a bargain deal. But less than a year down the line, it looks like another poorly thought-out move from the scouting department. Delap has scored just three times in 43 appearances for the club.
Liam Delap wants to stay at Chelsea
Delap just does not look like the right fit. He had thrived at Ipswich Town when getting space to run behind the opposition defence. That is rarely the case at Chelsea, as most teams are happy to play a low block against the Blues.
So, signing Delap appears to have been another piece of bad scouting. And Chelsea might be looking to part ways with the striker already. But does he?
According to Simon Phillips (via The Chelsea Chronicle), the club have been looking at options for Delap because they have been unhappy with his progress so far. The Blues have presented him to Strasbourg, but so far the striker has rejected every such attempt as he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.
What does the future hold for Delap at Stamford Bridge?
It is hard to see a bright future for Delap at Chelsea if he does end up staying. At the moment, Joao Pedro is clearly ahead of him in the pecking order. He has been the club’s highest goalscorer. And even when he is not scoring, he brings a lot more to the table.
Then there is the impending return of Nicolas Jackson from his loan stint at Bayern Munich. If the Senegalese international ends up staying on, it is safe to say that he would be ahead of Delap in the pecking order as well.
Then there is the already agreed deal for Emmanuel Emegha of Strasbourg. The Dutch international has dealt with constant injury problems though, so it is hard to predict how much of a role he will play for Chelsea come next season.
