Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are currently in the middle of one of the most entertaining Champions League fixtures we have witnessed in decades. But it is not just on the pitch that the two European giants might be competing at the moment. It looks like they have their eyes set on a Chelsea defender at this point in time as well.
Chelsea have constantly signed some of the brightest youngsters from around world football. Some have worked out. Most have not.
One of the understated success stories has been that of Malo Gusto. The Frenchman has been a steady performer for the Blues since his arrival.
He was at his best as a maurauding full-back under Mauricio Pochettino. But even under other managers, he has remained a regular part of first-team plans. And now, a move away from Chelsea could be on the cards.
European giants interested in signing Malo Gusto
According to Simon Phillips (via The Chelsea Chronicle), Gusto is drawing the interest of some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including PSG and Bayern Munich. The journalist said:
“SPTC Sources understand that PSG, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Inter Milan are all tracking Gusto ahead of the summer window opening up.
“It is unclear at the moment what the player’s stance in on any move, but we’ve heard that Chelsea are more than willing to keep Gusto and he’s even one who they may speak to about for improved contract terms.”
Obviously, that level of interest would be enough to turn the head of any player. Combine that with Chelsea’s struggles on the pitch and it is not hard to imagine Gusto considering a move. Now, it is up to the Blues to make sure that they can convince their best performers to keep trusting the project.
Chelsea cannot afford to lose players like Gusto right now
At this moment, Chelsea cannot afford to lose any more quality. Gusto is someone who has proven himself in the Royal Blue jersey. So, there is no reason to part ways with him.
Letting Gusto go would only add to Chelsea’s headaches. Let’s not forget, Reece James’ injury record means that they need a consistent backup option at right-back. So, if the Frenchman departs, the Blues would urgently need to find a suitable replacement for him.
Chelsea have been handing out new contracts to a lot of their vital players recently. Moises Caicedo and James have already signed. Talks are planned with Enzo Fernandez after this season. Conversations are believed to be underway with Trevoh Chalobah as well. Could Gusto find himself on that list soon?
The level of interest does go to show how highly Gusto is regarded in footballing circles. Now, let’s see what the future holds for the French full-back.
