Of course, we have talked a lot about how poor Chelsea have been throughout the season. That is quite evident from where they stand right now. Ninth in the Premier League table with three games to go. The worst part is that making the Champions League spots was not that difficult. But when you lose six straight, there is never going to be a real chance of making it.
All that being said, it would be unfair to overlook the impact that injuries have had on this team. One could argue that the season was derailed before it had even started as a result of Levi Colwill’s injury.
Other key players like Cole Palmer, Reece James and several others have had their problems over the course of the season as well. And one can only imagine how this campaign had turned out, if the Blues had had a better fitness record.
Unfortunately, things do not seem to be getting any better. Jesse Derry is now the latest player to be ruled out for the rest of the season. According to AOL, Calum McFarlane said about the winger’s situation:
“He’s not going to be available for us from now until the end of the season. It’s an abrupt end to his season, but amazing for him to make his debut, and I think he showed in that first half his quality and what he can bring to this team.”
Jesse Derry ruled out for rest of the season after injury against Nottingham Forest
Derry made his first start for Chelsea in the game against Nottingham Forest. And he was one of the Blues’ liveliest players until he picked up that head injury.
It was a worrying sight. Derry remained down for a while and got medical attention for a long time on the pitch before being stretchered off.
The positive is that he seems to be on the mend. It is never nice to see a player get injured. We can only wish him the best in his recovery. McFarlane said about his condition right now:
“It’s positive. It’s really positive. I don’t have the knowledge or the insights to go into massive detail, but all early signs are really positive.”
Who will start on the wings for Chelsea?
Chelsea are all out of options on the wings right now. Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto both missed that game against Forest due to knocks picked up in training, which is why Derry started. It remains to be seen whether they will be fit enough to feature against Liverpool.
Of course, Estevao and Jamie Gittens are already injured. So, Chelsea have very little in the name of options when it comes to the flanks.
It is quite likely that Cole Palmer will start on the right. But unfortunately, he has looked like a shadow of himself this season. He seems to be missing that instinct in his game. He is not making the right decisions, struggling to get past players and just looks sluggish in everything he does at the moment. If he ends up missing the World Cup, it might not be the worst thing in the long run. He does look like someone who could do with a bit of rest after playing constant football for three years, when he has not been out injured.
Who will start on the left? Well, your guess is as good as ours. Chelsea seem all out of options on their flanks.
