A large section of the Chelsea fanbase would be delighted if the club were able to bring in Morgan Rogers this summer. But that does not mean that it would automatically be a good signing. The Blues have brought in plenty of big-money players over the past four years, only for them to struggle to deliver.
Rogers is someone who has been brilliant for Aston Villa. But at the same time, there are also spells were he does not look as good.
In the Premier League, he has scored just two goals in his last 18 outings. That has coincided with Aston Villa’s downturn in form. They are lucky that a team like Chelsea have not taken advantage and moved ahead of them. In a different season, they probably would have.
Anyways, coming back to Rogers, consistency seems to be a problem with the mercurial Englishman. And Chelsea have been told not to make a move for him this summer.
Chelsea told why Morgan Rogers would be a terrible signing
Matt Law said on the London is Blue Podcast (via Chelsea.news)
“I think Morgan Rogers would be a terrible signing for Chelsea, terrible, he is not the right guy.
“He’s too immature. He’s another player who goes through hot and cold spells. I actually think someone like Anthony Gordon would be a smart signing, because I think he’s been consistent over a number of years.”
There is certainly an argument to be made for that. Chelsea need consistent players right now. Those who will come in and are almost guaranteed to contribute. Is Rogers that kind of player? Or is he going to turn out to be another Joao Felix, someone who is brilliant on his day but struggles to make an impact on a lot of occasions as well?
Obviously, Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks as well. With 10 Champions League goals to his name this season, he has caught the eye of European giants like Bayern Munich ahead of the summer transfer window.
Signing Morgan Rogers would be another risky move
It remains to be seen if Chelsea do end up making their move for Rogers this summer or not. To be honest, I would not be surprised if they do, despite his poor run of form.
Joe Shields is believed to be the one who took Rogers to Manchester City. So, there is that connection there. And Chelsea have already signed a lot of players based on that in recent years. Some have worked out. Others have not.
Anyways, it is hard to predict how a signing will turn out. Nobody could have foreseen how well Michael Olise would do at Bayern Munich, or Rayan Cherki at Manchester City. They were always exceptional talents but they took things to the next level when they joined a top club. Perhaps Rogers will too.
