Chelsea fans have witnessed a worrying collapse unfold before their eyes this season. The Blues have won just one point in their last seven league matches. While their chances of qualifying for the Champions League look almost impossible as of now, if they continue like this, the same could soon be true for European football altogether.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur’s situation is even worse. The Lilywhites are sitting just above the relegation zone and trying to remain in the Premier League. Let that sink in. One of the ‘Big Six’ could potentially get relegated.
Both London clubs, which were considered among the elite of the Premier League not too long ago, are now struggling to keep up with the rest.
It is expected that these two clubs will spend heavily in the upcoming summer transfer window, provided Spurs remain in the top flight. In fact, it looks like current Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has set his sights on a highly rated star who is also wanted by Chelsea.
Chelsea will need to step up their efforts to sign Jan Paul van Hecke
According to TEAMtalk, De Zerbi is keen to work with Jan Paul van Hecke at Tottenham. The Brighton and Hove Albion defender is also on the radar of Chelsea and Liverpool. The latter has already made a move to try to sign the player.
Chelsea seem to be trailing far behind in the race to sign Van Hecke at the moment. Liverpool have the upper hand, having already taken the first step. Additionally, Tottenham may also hold a slight edge over the Blues.
This is due to the fact that De Zerbi already managed the 25-year-old centre-back during his time at Brighton. However, that factor will only come into play if Spurs remain out of the relegation zone by the end of the season. Although that is looking increasingly likely, as the club have picked up back-to-back wins following the appointment of the Italian tactician.
Jan Paul van Hecke would be a great option alongside Levi Colwill at Chelsea
The Dutch centre-back is well on his way to reaching his prime in the near future. So, he would be a really good option for Chelsea. But if the Blues truly want to bring in Van Hecke, they will need to step up their efforts soon.
Chelsea have struggled to find a consistent defensive duo at the heart of their defence this campaign. But with Levi Colwill back on the pitch, the Blues have been handed a major boost. The English centre-back delivered an impressive performance this weekend against Liverpool in a 1-1 draw. It was his first start since returning from his ACL injury
Anyway, Van Hecke ticks almost all the boxes to be considered the ideal partner for Colwill at Chelsea next season. It has also been suggested that Brighton might let the player leave if a bid of around £60 million is tabled. But can BlueCo get the deal over the line ahead of other suitors like Liverpool and Tottenham? That remains to be seen.
