Noni Madueke reveals real reason he left Chelsea for Arsenal

Share

Chelsea could do with someone like Noni Madueke right now. The Blues’ options on the flanks are paper-thin at the moment. Estevao, Jamie Gittens and Jesse Derry are not expected to be back in action this season. On the other hand, Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto have missed the last two games with knocks. As a result, Calum McFarlane had to name a team without a traditional winger against Liverpool. Ideally, that is probably not what he would have gone with if options were available.

Madueke left Chelsea in the middle of the Club World Cup last summer. It was a decision that confused many.

If playing time was the reason behind it, Madueke surely would know that he would be a backup option to Bukayo Saka at Arsenal. But to be fair, the former Chelsea player has clocked more than 2000 minutes of football this season.

Right now, he is on the verge of a historic Champions League and Premier League double with Arsenal. If they can pull it off, Madueke’s move would be justified and then some. And he has finally shed some light on the real reasons behind his decision to quit Chelsea last summer.

Madueke sheds light on why he chose Arsenal over Chelsea

It looks like the chance to win trophies might have been the driving factor behind Madueke’s call to join Arsenal. According to Football 365, he said on Sky Sports:

I just believed Arsenal were going to win trophies so that’s why I moved.

Well, it appears they might be about to do just that. Of course, there is still a bit of football left to be played this season. They have three games in the Premier League with Manchester City on their tail. In the Champions League final, they will be taking on defending champions PSG, who were not having a great campaign but have gotten the results when it mattered the most.

Chelsea need to sign a winger or two this summer

The wings remain a problem for Chelsea. Estevao has impressed when he has played but his injury problems have raised some questions about his suitability for English football. Neto has blown hot and cold, like he always seems to do. Garnacho and Gittens have flopped since arriving. And it is far too early to rely on Derry to produce consistently.

So, it is very likely that Chelsea will need to sign at least one winger this summer. Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United is someone they have been linked with.

On the other hand, reports have emerged suggesting that they are not in the race for Said El Mala, the 19-year-old rising German winger with 17 goal contributions in his debut campaign in the Bundesliga.
