Chelsea want Spanish centre-back but there’s one problem

It is very clear that Chelsea need to strengthen their defence. In fact, some reports have come out today suggesting that one of the things Xabi Alonso would like to see the club do this summer, if he takes the managerial job, is bring in two centre-backs. That makes sense, considering how poor the Blues have been defensively.

Also, one cannot overlook the fact that Alonso used to play with three at the back during his time at Bayer Leverkusen. That is the system using which he achieved most of his success as a manager. And it would not be a surprise if he tries to play the greatest hits if he becomes Chelsea boss, after a disappointing spell at Real Madrid that did not last a whole season.

Chelsea will need to sign a centre-back or two this summer, whether they appoint Alonso or not. But there is a Real Madrid problem when it comes to one of their targets.

It has been a while since Jacobo Ramon left Real Madrid. He has established himself as one of the brightest centre-backs in Serie A at Como FC. But Los Blancos could still have the final word when it comes to his future.

Chelsea and Arsenal eye centre-back but Real Madrid still hold the key

According to SportsBoom, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in Ramon. But Real Madrid hold either an €8 million buy-back clause, or alternatively, rights to 50% of any future transfer.

That means that Real Madrid could choose to bring back Ramon for a fraction of what it would take to sign him outright. Or they would pocket a significant portion of the transfer fee Como would get, which would lead the Italian side to demand more.

As a result, it has been suggested that it could take around €45-50 million to sign Ramon from Como in this summer window.

Is Ramon the answer to Chelsea’s problems?

Personally, I do not feel that Ramon is the type of centre-back Chelsea need at this point in time. Admittedly, he could develop into one of the best in the world in his position.

That being said, Chelsea cannot depend on potential this summer. Not after how the last four seasons have gone for them. They need proven experience and quality.

Ramon has very little experience at the top level. And then, there is the question mark over his ability to make the jump from Serie A and adjust to the Premier League quickly.
