News broke out yesterday, which suggested that Xabi Alonso wanted Chelsea to sign two centre-backs this summer if he were to become the manager of the club. That is understandable considering how poor the Blues have been defensively this season in the absence of Levi Colwill, who had suffered an ACL injury in pre-season.
Colwill has returned recently and has instantly improved the Chelsea defence. But more could be needed. Especially if Alonso wants to play his three at the back system at Stamford Bridge.
There are no other centre-backs at the club who look like nailed-on starter-level players. Not even Trevoh Chalobah, who many view as a squad player at best.
One of the centre-backs Chelsea have been linked with quite often in recent weeks is AC Milan’s Strahinja Pavlovic. But there is some bad news for the Blues in the race to sign him this summer.
Chelsea handed Strahinja Pavlovic transfer blow by Manchester United
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), AC Milan and Max Allegri have made Pavlovic a point of reference for the backline this season. But if they miss out on Champions League football, they might have to transfer him.
Manchester United are ‘on his trail’. AC Milan are aware of Pavlovic’s growing reputation. Michael Carrick’s side are said to be ‘above all’ in the race.
Of course, this is not good news if you are a Chelsea fan who wants to see Pavlovic in the Royal Blue jersey next season. Let’s see how this transfer race plays out.
Chelsea’s need for centre-backs whether Xabi Alonso becomes maanger or not
It is worth mentioning that Chelsea have been linked with quite a few centre-backs in recent times. So, it will be interesting to see who they end up pushing for eventually.
Whether Alonso becomes the club’s manager or not, it is very clear that the Blues need to strengthen their centre-back ranks this summer. It has been one of their biggest weakness throughout this season.
Murillo of Nottingham Forest, Jan Paul van Hecke of Brighton, Joel Ordonez of Club Brugge, and several others are believed to be centre-backs who are on Chelsea’s radar. Those are not well-established superstars or proven winners. But they are players who could go to that level. Of course, the next manager is expected to have a big say on transfer matters. So, let’s get that appointment over the line first.
