Chelsea’s midfield could see some major changes before next season. Enzo Fernandez has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge recently, with Real Madrid among his possible destinations. While those rumours have gotten quieter, it does not mean they won’t crop back up once the campaign is over. It might all depend on his contract situation.

Additionally, Romeo Lavia has struggled with injury problems for his entire time at the club, since joining in 2023. Andrey Santos has also fallen short of many people’s expectations. As a result of these factors, Chelsea are already looking to bring in some new faces for the midfield.

Recently, reports emerged suggesting that the Blues are monitoring Middlesbrough youngster Hayden Hackney as a potential candidate. But who is this player suddenly appearing on Chelsea’s radar?

Who is Hayden Hackney?

Hackney has been one of the key players for Middlesbrough this season. The English youngster has appeared in 40 matches for the club so far, scoring six goals and providing eight assists.

Hackney’s primary position is defensive midfield. He could potentially operate as a double pivot partner with Moises Caicedo if he arrives at Chelsea. Apart from that, the 23-year-old can also play in central midfield, as a number 10, or in left midfield areas.

In terms of defensive contribution, the youngster has made 205 recoveries, 68 tackles, and 21 interceptions in the Championship as per FotMob. These figures highlight his abilities as a well-rounded midfielder.

The youngster has already caught the attention of multiple Premier League clubs besides Chelsea, including Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion. A transfer is likely to cost in the region of £30 million, which should not be a problem for the Blues if they are convinced about his ability.

Is Hackney a future Chelsea starter or more of a backup?

There’s no denying that Chelsea have one of the best midfields in the Premier League. Of course, that would change slightly if Fernandez ends up leaving. But that is not certain at this point. As of now, it is very difficult to see Hackney consistently breaking into the starting XI anytime soon.

Hackney is seemingly more of a backup option. But that isn’t to say he isn’t talented or could never cement his place in Chelsea’s squad. He certainly has the potential to do so, and who knows, he might end up doing just that.

In conclusion, Hackney is a versatile midfielder who could be a top player in the near future. Chelsea could use someone like him in their squad, especially at a time when the squad has been weakened by injuries. But then again, there are other areas which might need reinforcements a lot more urgently. So let’s see what the Blues decide ultimately.

matchday.
