Morgan Rogers is someone who has been linked with a move to Chelsea for a few years now. The Englishman has developed into one of the most highly regarded players in the Premier League over his time at Aston Villa. Following their Europa League win, the time might have come for him to take the next step.
Rogers did sign a new contract with Aston Villa not too long ago. But it is believed that they would not stand in his way, if he wants to leave this summer, of course, if their transfer valuation is met.
It is not hard to see why Chelsea might be interested in signing Rogers. He would fit the ‘Premier League-proven’ criteria that they are looking for. But at the same time, there are those who feel it is not the move the Blues need right now.
According to The Sportzine, Morgan Rogers wants an Arsenal move. He believes he can easily walk into their starting XI ahead of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard and prefers a move to the London club.
Morgan Rogers prefers move to Arsenal
So, it looks like Chelsea are out of the running to sign Rogers. Or at the very least, they are not the preferred destination for him.
Obviously, if Arsenal want to sign Rogers, they would need to meet Aston Villa’s asking price. It is believed that the Villans would want a fee in the region of £80 million to part ways with their star player.
The report has also added that Chelsea have not shown interest this year. Manchester City were also keeping tabs, but have shelved their plans.
So, Arsenal might have a free run when it comes to signing Rogers. Now, it remains to be seen if they will make their move.
Why Chelsea might be right not to make Rogers move
Rogers is a talent for sure. But he is also inconsistent. That is now what Chelsea need at this point in time.
Contrary to popular belief, Chelsea have no lack of talent. On their day, they can get the better of anybody, as we saw in the Club World Cup final against PSG, when they played the now back-to-back European champions off the park.
The 3-0 win over Barcelona is another example. It could have easily been three more in favour of Chelsea. That is what this team is capable of when in flow and under the right coaching.
What they need is to perform consistently and deliver, whether it is against the biggest team in the world or the bottom team in the Premier League. It is this consistency they have been missing. Rogers would solve that problem. He might simply add to it.
